Ipoh Food Adventures

The next, part 2 of my birthday road trip was in Ipoh. I have never been to Ipoh so it was a good experience. Driving there from Cameron, we took the route through the mountains so Liam could drive the winding roads. Ipoh has a small town vibe and most shops close by 6 or 7pm.

We arrived around 2pm and checked into Mary's Residence Air BnB. It was a landed property corner lot and had several suites. It was really clean and the kakak gave us the key. The rooms were simple and nice.

So for our first food adventure, we went to eat bean sprouts chicken! We went to the main joint that had the best reviews. I ordered the hor fun and Liam had the oiled rice. The bean sprouts were super yummy! They were fat, juicy and sweet. The sauce was salty and went so well with the bean sprouts.

The shop at night

We had the steamed chicken, char siew and some innards. The char siew in Ipoh is really different. It is dry and deep fried. The innards were tasty and came with some spring onion. The chicken was chewy and juicy. The sauces were all nice. I ate so much so fast. It was so yum!

After bean sprouts, we went to a cendol place and it was refreshing after the salty meal. It was a small shop with some benches and chairs to sit at while enjoying cendol. It was counter service too and we didn't wait long.

The cendol was so yummy! It wasn't too sweet. I ordered the normal cendol and Liam ordered the red bean one. The ice was kinda uneven and lumpy but overall, as a whole it was great. I like that it wasn't too sweet or creamy. It was sweet enough and refreshing. Light and yummy.

We drove around a while and saw nothing to do but eat. We bought some hiong pia for us and for my parents. They were cheap and affordable. The ones in the proper packaging were nicer than the ones in clear plastic tied with rubberband. We also bought some "wallet biscuits". Wanted to buy Ipoh white coffee but realized I don't drink 3 in 1 anymore as it is too sweet.

We came out again for dinner and most shops were closed. We Googled and found a place that was still open selling wantan mee called Cheong Kee Wan Tan Mee. We went there and it was a small shop. The wantan mee came with minced meat and was really unlike conventional wantan mee. It was nice and came with bean sprouts and a side of wantan soup. Really nice taste.

After dinner we went for a stroll at the pasar malam. There was no street food there, sadly. Only some usual pasar malam goods like wallets, clothes, perfume and accessories. Was hoping to get some food there but ended up just walking around for fun, looking at stuff.

The only places around there that were open were the beansprouts chicken. We tried a different place and had supper of beansprouts and chicken without rice. It was nice and enjoyed it again. It was just as good as the one we had for lunch.

We went home after supper and binge watched Netflix. The next day we woke up a little late and had to rush to the breakfast chee cheong fun place called Canning Chee Cheong Fun. Omg, we were so worried it would close and were kinda cursing at the traffic lights. We got there and luckily they were still serving. I really wanted to try it.

It was so yummy. The sauce was kinda mild and had a sour chilli sauce mixed in. It was not the usual sweet sauce in KL! Wow things here move to a different beat. We also had char siew and the yong tofu. The yong tofu was yummy too and there were like 4 or 5 pieces in the set.

We went back to the Air BnB after that to pack and check out. We wanted to eat Kai See Hor Fun which is shredded chicken hor fun but it was so packed there was no parking. After several unsuccessful rounds, we gave up and went to fill petrol to go back to KL.

The journey back was alright and we played 90's music again. Was kinda sad as the road trip was coming to an end. But after settling in at home and unpacking, things went back to normal. Overall it was a fun trip and I really enjoyed it. Most of all, it was my first birthday road trip, thanks to Liam. 😊Thanks cutie! Thanks for reading too guys, and have a happy weekend!
