Last Tuesday was Liam's birthday and I made him a birthday cake! It was a cute cake and I made it in the shape of a Totorro. Liam likes the cartoon. I told Liam it would be a durian cake, but didn't tell him about the Totorro so it was a pleasant surprise.
It was a sponge cake with whipped cream and fondant as the topping. The filling was durian in between the 2 layers of sponge cake. It tasted light and airy as the sponge cake and whipped cream were really light. I used the same recipe as my previous durian cake.
I baked the sponge cake a day before and on Tuesday I only iced the cake. I iced the whole cake with whipped cream then made fondant embellishments like the eyes, nose and stomach and pasted them on. The ears were made from grey cardboard. The whipped cream melted in the car but was still ok but the fondant was slipping around on top of the whipped cream! I also made the little black dust bunnies! I coloured everything with black food colouring to make the greys and blacks, and coloured toothpicks black too for the whiskers.
It was a 6 inch cake and we shared it with 2 of his friends. So total 4 people, and we finished it there and then. We pulled off all the cake decor before we ate it. I don't like eating fondant... too sweet. The whipped cream was nice and everything was not so sweet. The durian taste was mild. Liam said I was stingy with the durian and I agree I should have put more durian. I guess it passed the taste test as his friend said it was yummy.
My friend Adia made fun of my cake and used it as a Hari Raya greeting. It was Hari Raya on Wednesday after Liam's birthday. Below is the greeting. It is meant to symbolise that things don't always turn out as expected and you should forgive people. Maaf Zahir & Batin means forgiving direct and indirect offenses. Raya was 2 days public holiday for us and was enjoyable. My Muslim frineds went back to their hometown so didn't visit them.
Anyway, as of yesterday Monday, Liam and I are doing intermittent fasting. Hope it works. This Sunday 16th June is my 5k! Omg I have not been training and have been stuffing my face instead. I don't think I am gonna make it. The time limit is 1 hour for 5km and my time on treadmill is below one hour but I have no idea how fast to walk on the actual run!
Anyway, good luck to me and hope I don't fail on run day!Labels: baking, cakes, celebration
