Christmas Cookies

I am ready for Christmas although I don't buy presents or decorate. Kinda not so materialistic anymore. Although I did shop at Mitsui Outlet Park with my mom and bros and got myself a perfume. I guess a way to celebrate is with food, which I will do.

I made some fancy ginger Christmas cookies! They are called Zimtsterne and made from ground almond, egg white and lots of icing sugar. No flour or butter so kinda healthy with the exception of the sugar. My family is on a diet and so I didn't go all out to make too many things. I wanted to make a blackforest cake but at the last minute the canned cherries were sold out.

Anyway, these pretty Christmas cookies were taken from BBC Good Food here. They are so festive looking with the star shape. They are German in origin and are light and grainy because of the ground almond, with a yummy brittle meringue on top! Yum! They are traditional German fare and are popular there during Christmas. The cinnamon and ginger give it that Christmas spicy aroma and is very Christmas indeed!

Anyway, the recipe is really easy to make and kinda fun. I liked making it. So nice to play with the frothy meringue. But it was really sticky and hard to cut with the cookie cutter. I had to chill the cookie dough often halfway. Maybe because of our Malaysian weather. Also, it was hard to roll out with the rolling pin as it was so sticky and I had to wrap the rolling pin in plastic wrap. They didn't turn out as pretty or neat as the recipe photo, as the meringue was hard to spread thinly.

In the end, there were 2 baking trays of cookies, and filled a large jar. I hope everyone enjoys them despite being on a diet! I tried my best to accommodate them. But if the cookies are too sweet, I guess I will understand. Lol. Anyway, Merry Christmas! Tis the season to be jolly!
