Melaka Trip

Yesterday we went to Melaka for an overnight trip. It was good to get away from the city and enjoy the "kampung". It was really hot in the afternoon in Melaka yesterday, as usual, and it rained today as we were leaving. I don't know why it is always so hot in Melaka. Maybe because my grandpa's house is a single storey house.

We had lunch in Sentral in Melaka. Nothing special. Malay rice. We arrived in Kong Kong's house after lunch as we did not want the old people to wait for us for lunch.

My grandparents were fine and were happy to see us. These are the long line of yams in front of Kong Kong's house. We ate yams for dinner with rice. It's yam cooked in the rice cooker together with the rice. Really good.

Kong Kong saved us some bananas of which he was so proud. The small ones are ripening already and could be eaten. The red bananas are not ripe yet. My mom plans to make banana bread with them.

These are mini cempedaks that Kong Kong harvested for us. The cempedak season is coming to an end and these were the few that were left. They were really popular and Kong Kong sold lots of them. We have been eating cempedaks this past month. Everytime someone went back to Melaka we would get some cempedaks from them.

For breakfast today we had cempedak fritters and sukun fritters.

Now it comes to dinner time feasting! My mom and Ah Ma made deep fried bittergourd. So good. It uses Indian herbs. I have blogged about this before in a previous post. They were crispy and I love fried things.

I must confess, I have not been vegan completely. Yesterday I went all out and ate everything. I ate the meat, eggs and dairy. I will forgive myself since I was on holiday and it's a special occasion to go to Melaka and I don't get to eat Ah Ma's cooking often.

Today I am back to being vegan. It is hard to stay vegan. I keep making excuses. For example, my mom would cook veggies with dried shrimp and I would have to pick out the dried shrimp so instead I just ate it. Or mooncakes with egg yolk. I am not adhering strictly and bending all the rules. I also allow myself to eat free range eggs.

Below is pork belly stew with mushrooms that Ah Ma cooked for us. It was so delish. I helped myself to it after dinner as well and left very little for their lunch the next day.

Here is the dinner spread. Clockwise from top left is pork belly stew, sambal petai, fried bittergourd, lady's fingers and at the bottom is yam rice. I had a great dinner. It was all so yum!

I feel like a fatty now. Every family gathering we celebrate with food. I have to diet on my non celebration days. I can't be having a party daily! Ok, will go easy on the snacks too.

Anyway, I had a good trip to Melaka and the food was great! Thanks to mom and dad who made this trip possible.
