Edible Cempedak Seeds

My grandfather's farm has no more durians. The trees are not bearing any more durian fruit. I guess durian season is almost over. But there are other fruits as a consolation! Like rambutans and cempedaks.

We took 2 huge cempedaks back to KL and have been enjoying them. They are sweet and creamy. They come in a large fruit and inside they have bite sized pieces with a seed inside. The texture is a little fibrous. The make a good dessert after a meal.

But did you know the seeds can be eaten? They taste nutty, kind of like chestnuts. Except chestnuts are sweeter. This one has no sweetness. And it has a bite to it.

Cempedak seeds after boiling

Basically, you soak the seeds in water overnight. The skin will peel off by itself after that. Then you boil them in a pot of water until they turn soft. The skin will come off and you can even pull it off.

Before boiling, with the skin

Anyway, we have so much fruit now! I have told myself to eat more fruit. I think I could do a meal replacement, replacing one meal a day with fruit! Might try that.
