Flea Market in Petaling Street

On Tuesday, I went with my friend Celeste to Petaling Street again. (I realize the area is called Petaling Street and Pasar Seni is Central Market). It was a labour day holiday. We planned to go to the flea market there called Pasar Karat, literally translated as Rust Market. It was aptly named as the place seemed dirty and dodgy with things sold on mats on the floor.

It opens from 5.30am until 10.30am. I met Celeste at 7.30am at the Pasar Seni MRT station at the Rapid Bus exit and we walked there, quite near.  It was kind of what I expected. The clothes were really dirty but you can get some cool stuff. Celeste has found Zara and Topshop clothes there.

The clothing items ranged between RM2-RM5 and towards the end of the morning they let them go for cheap. The bags and shoes also go for cheap, although you have to bargain. When I first entered the market I bought a yellow bag for RM6. There was this one shoe seller who sold cute Topshop shoes but the size was a little too small for me. You are allowed to try the shoes. Sometimes they are in good condition.

They also sell old gadgets and handphone accessories. I needed a USB charger but I didn't trust their products. I forgot the price, but I thought I better not risk it. They also sell socks, perfume and knick knacks. I saw some antiques. There was an old gramophone and an antique mirror. They looked quite legit but I didn't ask the price.

My favourite shop was this Malay aunty and she sold cute clothes which are kind of my style. I saw a stuffed panda and Stitch and thought it was cute. I bought a long sleeved dress and a few items. The total was RM14 for 4 items, and I didn't feel like bargaining down to RM10 although I probably should have.

We stopped halfway for a drink in an alley and I had kopi ais. The place was very crowded as it was a public holiday and you have to be very conscious of your belongings as people will bump into you and push you around. I kept feeling I was blocking people or was in the way. People pushed my backpack a lot. I am just glad nothing got stolen.

Anyway, I liked some items there and you really have to slowly look through things as you can find some nice unique stuff. After shopping we had another drink in Petaling Street. It was a good day, and a good experience.
