We just came back from 'balik kampong' today! It was a one night stay at my mom's-side grandparents' house. We brought goodies for Ah Kong and Ah Ma and met my uncle as well. My mom went visiting there too.
These were the goodies we came back with... Wow... a carload of loot... We have papayas, jambus, a pineapple, eggplants, mulberries, foochuk, guavas, yams.... and some soil and a chilli plant not shown here. The round cake like thing with the red sticker is ninko.
I watched movies on my laptop and tried to help out when I could. Usually that means carrying things or calling people to come eat dinner.
Yesterday we had Teo Chew porridge with salted fish for lunch... my favourite. For dinner we had chicken curry, fried chicken, fishball soup, and some veg dishes. Yum yum.. Today I had ninko cooked with yam.... The ninko is sandwiched in 2 yam slices and deep fried with batter. Ninko is my favourite... 😋
The doggy there is named Xiao Xiao and is always tied up coz she is naughty. At times I was tempted to set her free but my grandma has her reasons for tying her up.
My mom visited the neighbour who makes and sells foochuk... also my favourite. My mom gave her some goodies and she gave us a sack of foochuk! Awesome! I am thinking of fishball and meatball soup with foochuk and leek for dinner tonight....
This here durian is Ah Kong playing with us. These are bite sized durians which I am not sure can be eaten or not. But they are just a teaser for what's to come in June.... Ah Kong says the durian season this year is in June....
These are mini yams and I am thinking about stewed yam with pork... so many possibilities....
These are jambu air, a watery, crunchy fruit that grew by the bucket-loads in Ah Kong's back yard... they all blew away in the wind and the floor was scattered with jambu. Ah Kong wants them to remain on the ground so they become fertilizer and my mom picked up some from the ground and washed them and filled a box with them.
Ah Kong picked mulberries for me this morning and my mom handed me the box of mulberries! I put them in the car boot absentmindedly but at least I brought them back... I feared that I had left them on the table in the house. I am thinking of pudding topped with mulberries and whipped cream, or smoothies topped with mulberries and whipped cream. (whipped cream from the can I bought and have to slowly eat).
Overall this trip was great and enjoyable. Our bellies and fridge are full now, but at least all of it is healthy! 😂
