Recycling is really simple to do. I think most people do it nowadays. What we do is we separate our trash for the garbage collectors. It is now a law in KL that we have to separate the trash. Secondly, we collect items like bottles and cans and donate it to a recycling centre that has a drop off point nearby. Thirdly, we compost our kitchen garbage - mostly vegetable trimmings, not meat products unfortunately. But I try to do my part and eat less meat.
It is so easy to do, and we don't even think about it anymore. It has become automatic. And that is us doing our bit for the planet without effort.
To celebrate recycling, I did a DIY project making little cat pots and a piggy bank from plastic 1.5 litre soda bottles. I made 2 cat pots to be exact, one white, one blue. And 1 piggy bank from the top of the bottle. The other bottle top I recycled.
They are so cute. I got them here for the cats and here for the piggy bank. I changed them a bit. For the cat pots, I cut the bottles with scissors and painted them with acrylic paint as I don't have spray paint. If I were to buy spray paint, it would defeat the purpose, as I want to recycle. I painted them and left them to dry overnight and the next day I drew the faces on them with a Sharpie.
As for the remaining top of the bottle, I made it into a piggy bank. I glued on pink paper for the back. Then I taped on the ears with white construction tape. Then I added styrofoam legs and painted on the eyes and nose with acrylic paint. Lastly I put in some coins. The snout bottle cap was too small to fit in large coins. I could only put in 5 sen and 10 sen coins. Hmm... maybe I will cut a slot on the top so I can put in larger coins. It would be good for kids for them to save loose change, but not for me! I keep all my money in my wallet. Maybe I would gift this or use it to store other things.
Anyway I had a lot of fun doing this project and I hope I can promote recycling on my blog. It is so easy and we can do our part for the planet. Of course we should not just recycle but also stop new things coming in our doors. If you can buy something without the packaging that would be great. And also try to consume less so we don't end up with so much trash in the first place. That goes for fast fashion and other consumables too. Let's consume responsibly.Labels: environment, projects
