To coincide with Ramadan, I will try intermittent fasting for a week! I am not as stringent as Muslims who fast and I won't be waking up before dawn. I can have liquids throughout the day though I will try to keep it to the minimum. Basically anything liquid like water, coffee, sweet drinks and clear broth is okay. Ideally I want to keep it to a minimum. I will also try to lose weight with the fast and also exercise as I can have water. Ok, so lets get started on the journey!
Day 1 - Monday 12 June
I had my morning coffee and felt fine. No hunger pangs. I had some barley water and ate a bit of the barley seeds therefore not adhering to my fast. But not all is lost, I will tread on. I had some date caramel and I think it is almost a liquid right? Ok, no more excuses. I exercised at 6pm for 20 minutes on the treadmill. I felt very hungry after the workout. At dinnertime I ate my usual amount. And I had supper.
Day 2 - Tuesday 13 June
I had coffee as usual in the morning and afternoon. No other food except diet soda and water. I didn’t feel hungry. I did some yoga in the evening and waited for my mom to cook dinner. I watched YouTube videos while waiting and forgot all about dinner. Finally had dinner at 8pm and had the rest of my date mousse cake for dessert.
Day 3 - Wednesday 14 June
Today I had coffee in the morning and afternoon again. My parents bought extra for lunch but I didn’t cave in. I made a pineapple smoothie in the afternoon and drank that. It’s a liquid so it is ok. I did a yoga workout.
Day 4 – Thursday 15 June
I had coffee and drank diet soda and water. Was feeling some hunger pangs and felt that my stomach was growling. I just drank water and soda to satisfy my stomach. I was afraid I would get gastritis, and was tempted to eat bread. But I stuck it out and was steadfast. (Pun not intended). I did 30 minutes of walking on the treadmill. My supper probably eliminated the calories burnt from the workout. I had banana cake, a bak chang rice dumpling and guava.
Day 5 – Friday 16 June
Had my coffee as usual and I made a pineapple smoothie for tea. I didn’t work out today but I vacuumed the living room and kitchen. For dinner, I was not super hungry because I already had the pineapple smoothie which was quite heavy. I ate supper but a light one.
Day 6 – Saturday 17 June
I had half-boiled eggs for my breakfast as I forgot about my fast until I took a bite of the half-boiled eggs. Then I realized they were sort of a liquid. I allowed it and finished the egg. I am cheating again. I also had a chocolate mousse later with the same logic. - that is was liquid. Actually I had made the choc mousse yesterday and let it set overnight. I ate it today. It was super nice – quite firm. I considered it a liquid… yup, cheating. Technically is it liquid-like. For dinner I had food from a Ramadan Bazaar. Supper had leftovers.
Day 7 – Sunday 18 June
Finally… the last day of my fast!! I feel ok. No gastric pains. Felt like eating fruit, but can’t. I stuck to my coffee, water and diet soda. I weighed myself today and I was 69.9kg!! I have dropped one kg! Probably due to water weight, but nevertheless, an achievement. I had tai chow for dinner and chocolate mousse for dessert.
So in conclusion, it was a great experiment. I would like to continue to fast… I feel better when I don’t eat so much. I don’t feel sluggish like I normally would after lunch.
Stats
Start weight – 71.2kg
End weight – 69.9kg
Total weight loss – 1.3kg
Maybe I will continue my fast and make it to be a few times a week. It seems to go well with me. My stomach feels acidic sometimes though. Maybe when it does I can drink liquids.
