The past few days, the weather has been very rainy. Today as well. I think it is rainy season, but where weather is concerned, anything goes nowadays.
Yesterday Fai invited me out for dinner saying he wanted to eat bak kut teh in Pandan Jaya. Then when we got there he changed his mind. Instead we went for a nice dessert treat at a place in Pandan Jaya called Soon Kee Herbal House. Guess I could do with a lighter dinner so I could reduce calories! I didn't really do my intermittant fasting today. I did have some snacks for tea. I really didn't mind having jelly for dinner!
The shop has a very Chinese themed interior and the desserts are all displayed in a glass screened refrigerator. The names in chinese and english are displayed and the prices.
Fai recommended the gui ling gao. It is a chinese herbal jelly, black in colour and a bit bitter and slightly sweet. It comes in a small cup with a spoon. So we each ordered that. It has some health benefits I think from the jelly and the herbs.
Then Fai recommended the longan tofu, with is longan fruit with milky jelly that looks like tofu but is actually jelly. It came in a sweetened liquid that tastes like longan. And it had a few longan fruit on top. It was really sweet but tangy also. Very pleasant taste and refreshing.
Overall it was a good dessert. It was very light for dinner and if not for the sugar, quite healthy as jelly has many health benefits. The jelly in gui ling gao is actually made from turtle shells! And added starch for thickening. The agar agar which I think is in the longan tofu is made of vegetable gelatine from algae. It has laxative properties and is an appetite suppressant. Gelatine from animal sources is also good for the immune system and the gut. Not bad for a dessert!
